Big Shop vs. "Side Job" Computer Repair Technician
Your computer is running slow, not running at all or spitting out all kinds of error messages. You basically have 3 choices - take it to a name brand shop, find a local "side job" computer tech (friend or family) or try to fix it yourself.
The Big Name Brand Store
There is a certain level of peace-of-mind when dealing with the local name brand computer repair shop. It's almost guarantied they will be there if you have a problem with the services received and most in-store technicians always have someone to answer to if you where to ever have a problem with the service you receive.
Prices will almost always be a bit higher than any other option simply because of the increased overhead involved in running a large shop.
The Local Independent "Side Job" Computer Technician
One of the biggest advantages to an independent tech is price. Most have very little overhead in operating a side business. Another would be flexibility. There are plenty of highly skilled and very cheap techs out there, the only problem is insuring you find the right one. Be sure to get references and if you are going to be alone with the tech be sure to let someone know what is going on.
Fix It Yourself
There are plenty of documents and websites out there dedicated to helping you help yourself, from the minor to the major repair jobs. If you are tech savvy, this will be the cheapest option.
Summary
While the choice depends on many factors, just know that there are many options. Never take the first that comes along, always be sure to get a second opinion - it never hurts!
